How does church tax (kirkollisvero) affect freelancers in Finland?

Church tax rates vary by parish and year. Membership rules are set by church law and Vero. Verify percentages and membership status in OmaVero.

Kirkollisvero is a local income tax collected from members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and the Orthodox Church. It is not a business tax, but it reduces personal take-home pay when you withdraw money from a sole trader business or pay yourself from a company. This article explains how it interacts with freelance cash flow.

Who pays church tax

You pay church tax if you are a member of a qualifying church on 1 January of the tax year. The tax applies to earned income and certain other personal income categories — not to corporate tax at the company level.

Non-members do not pay kirkollisvero. Leaving the church ends the tax for future years; the process is handled through the church and reflected on your tax record.

Rates and parishes (verify current percentages)

The rate depends on your parish (seurakunta). Percentages are typically in the low single digits of taxable income and can differ between Helsinki, smaller towns, and the Orthodox Church.

Do not rely on round numbers from blog posts. Your tax decision shows the applied rate. Rates can change when parishes merge or revise their church tax decision.

Prepayments and freelancer cash flow

Church tax is collected together with other personal income tax through prepayments (ennakonpidätys) or on assessment. Freelancers who take irregular draws should remember church tax when estimating net pay from a gross invoice.

If you use a light-entrepreneur billing service, church tax still applies to your personal income — the service does not remove membership obligations.

Bookkeeping separation

Church tax belongs in personal tax planning, not in ALV returns. Your business ledger records revenue and expenses; owner withdrawals or salary from a company trigger personal tax including kirkollisvero where applicable.

Domovoy Financial Guardian keeps business books separate from personal tax. Export totals for your accountant; they map withdrawals to your personal tax card and church membership status.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop paying church tax?

Resign church membership through your parish or the official resignation process. The change applies from the date set by church law and updates your tax record for following years.

If I own a company, is church tax on salary only?

Church tax applies to personal earned income such as salary and certain benefits — not to undistributed company profit. Dividend taxation has separate rules; ask your accountant.

Do foreign residents in Finland pay church tax?

Only if you are a church member under Finnish rules. Many expatriate freelancers are not members and pay no kirkollisvero.
